Cayambe Volcano
Cayambe is a volcano in the Central Cordillera of northern Ecuador. It is the third most important elevation in the country but behind Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. It is the highest summit in the Andes north of the equator.
At an altitude of 4600m is the Ruales-Oleas-Berge refuge, accessible by 4x4 vehicle on a road that is normally in poor condition, So the refuge was named after the death by avalanche of three mountain climbers (two Ecuadorians and one French), an accident that has fueled the reputation of being dangerous in the Cayambe.
However, despite the large number of cracks that can be found, the Cayambe is no more dangerous than other nearby volcanoes, such as Cotopaxi or Antisana.

Failed attempts
It is recommended to go in 4x4 cars because the road to get to the refuge is very rocky.
